For Christmas last year, my Dad gave each of us 2 tickets to go to a Longhorn Football game in Austin. We "picked" the Iowa State game and planned on taking the kiddos. (Kelson and Parker have both been to atleast 1 game in Austin since they were born!). The week before the Iowa State Game, the UT family lost a legend. Coach Royal passed away. It was sad...like seeing one of your childhood heroes go. We were excited to see how the game honored him though (the stadium is already named after him).
We drove down to Austin Friday night and checked in to our hotel. It was the kids bedtime, so we settled for picking up some Baby A's mexican food and eating it at the hotel. Doug and I were laughing about how much Football weekends have changed for us. Before Kids, we would be meeting up for drinks and dinner, then I would normally wake up early - run Town Lake and then tailgate for hours before the game. Not so much the same with 2 kiddos 3 and under.
The game was a morning game which we were thankful for. We headed to the alumni center to get pics of the kids on the iron horse statues. (I remember my parents getting pictures of us before games on this statue). We had fun letting the kids run around the alumni center before the game while we enjoyed a beer.
Kelson hooking his horns...and Parker not so sure about sitting on the statue
He's so proud of his "hook em!" Love this sweet boy
We then headed in to the stadium. Before the game we actually sold my Dad's 2 tickets and bought 4 tickets together (first year for us to actually buy the kids tickets...normally we just "sneak" them in). Luckily we found 4 that were under the cover so we weren't in the sunshine. Praise God as it was hot and the kiddos would have been miserable.
We got in to the stadium early to let the kids explore and get adjusted to the stadium. Parker had a great time climbing the bleachers and was quite upset when the folks that were sitting there came to sit down.
Sweet Kelson is still having a hard time with loud noises, so we brought his headphones. How cute is he?
Texas Fight!
They put DKR in the middle of the Horns on the 50...neat tribute to Coach Royal
Parker fell asleep during halftime and slept in the Ergo the rest of the game. We were grateful for that b/c he was NOT happy about being contained in our seats. He just wanted to crawl around.I love that we are able to share these traditions with our kids and hope that someday we are coming to Austin to visit them in school. Either way, it's fun for us to show them around campus and take them to games. Hook Em Horns!
